Dominic cleared his throat, bringing my attention back to him.  “I made a list of things that need to be done and how often,” he said, holding out a small folder to me.  I took it, my hand shaking.  “It’s mostly cleaning, some cooking, and other small household tasks.  I assume you can handle that, Ms. Fay?”
“You can call me Lily,” I said softly, clutching the folder tight in my arms.
He raised an eyebrow and that enchanting smile spread across his face again.  “That’s an unusually pretty name for a girl.  I thought it was all Bethanys and Brittanys these days.”
I blushed and couldn’t help but return his smile.  Something inside me tightened.  “It was my grandmother’s name, Dominic.  Er, I mean, Mr. Evans.”
His smile broadened and I almost melted.  “Well, even though we’ve never met before, I see I need no introduction for some reason.”  He held out his hand with mock seriousness.  I grasped him, amazed at how large and rough his grip was compared to my own small hand.  “Nonetheless, I am Dominic Evans.  Nice to finally meet you, Lily.”
Finally?  What was that supposed to mean?  I caught myself again wondering at how I had been hired.  Why had Mr. Evans reversed the decision of his assistant?
“Anyway, most of what I need from you is general upkeep of the household.”  He ran a finger across the top of a mahogany table beside him, wiping a streak in the layer of dust.  “As you can see it’s a bit of a mess.  Work keeps me busy and it’s been a while since I’ve had a wo—”  He caught himself and the smile disappeared from his face.  After a ragged breath he continued.  “I mean, it’ll be good to have help around again.”

The change in him in that moment—the obvious pain his slipped comment had caused—was staggering.  So the rumors about his wife were true, I thought.  And in that moment, like the foolish little girl I was, I swore that I would mend this broken man.
